Why should I learn Filipino Martial Arts?

Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), also known as Kali, Eskrima/Escrima or Arnis, is often called ‘the art of stickfighting’. This may stem from the most obvious difference to all other martial arts. Already beginners start with an intense stickfighting training. But to reduce this art to “stickfighting” is like reducing an iceberg to the little tip which is above the surface of the water. This Filipino art of fighting is much more!
FMA is stickfighting, knife defense, knife fighting, trapping, boxing, kickboxing, grappling, lock flows, self-defense, principles and tactics. It is the decathlon of martial arts.

You will learn:
  • handling and defending against weapons of all lengths: sticks, knife, palm stick, staff, flexible tools, coordinated usage of short and long tools and weapons and applications with everyday objects …
  •  the complete range of boxing arts, like in boxing, kickboxing, Jeet Kune Do (JKD) …
  • grappling skills like in Submission Wrestling, MMA, BJJ, Jiu Jitsu …
  • specific self-defense techniques and tactics like in Krav Maga, Keysi Fighting Method (KFM), Defence Lab (DL), Defence Art (DefArt) …
  • the underlying principles and tactics as well as background knowledge about the art
What is the central point? Why is FMA so brilliant and why do thousands of martial artists around the world do cross training with FMA or even change their focus completely to study this art in depth?
It is probably the most complete fighting art in the world. It is weapon training and weapon defense, it is about boxing skills as well as grabbling skills and it is always self-defense orientated. It covers the complete range of fighting, stand-up and ground fighting, with and against weapons as well as hand-to-hand combat. The nutshell of this art is the transferability. Foremost you will not learn techniques, but principles. These principles of motions can be applied in many different constellations. You will learn double stick patterns. But these patterns are much more than stick patterns, they teach you basic coordination and movements which can also be applied with only one stick, with palm stick, with everyday objects like umbrella, bunch of keys, credit card … and also empty hands, against somebody empty hands, or armed with a bottle, club, baseball bat, knife … One technique which works in many constellations – this is brilliant, this is the key point of this fantastic art.

Hollywood has taken notice of this incredible, complete and highly effective martial art and took advantage of it to create brilliant action fight sequences, like Matt Damon in Bourne Identity, Daniel Craig in the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace, Denzel Washington in Book of Eli and The Equalizer, Liam Neeson in Taken, Wesley Snipes in Blade II and Blade Trinity, Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible III, Tommy Lee Jones in The Hunted, Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Dune and also in TV series like Arrow or Hanna. In all these movies Filipino Martial Arts is the basis of their fight choreographies.

Finally, many Military Forces all around the world, especially Special Forces, use Filipino Martial Arts to improve their skills with and against edged and impact weapons as well as hand to hand combat. Law Enforcement forces use FMA training to improve knife defense skills and telescopic baton handling.

Take the chance to study this incredible, very complete and highly effective martial art.

In a regular class training you get input maybe once or twice a week. If you study online, you have access to your teacher and current lessons 24/7/365. You can watch it at your computer at home, with your tablet in a park and with your mobile phone while sitting in a bus.
